Let me tell you about a family living across from my aparment, the Songs. They are really nice people.

 - nice <-> impolite, rude, mean, not very friendly


1. They moved in about a year ago, and introduced themselves by bringing over some food.


2. They are very friendly and sociable, especially Mrs. Song.

 - kind : 마음씨가 고운 착한, generous     cf) friendly : 친절한


She is a stay-at-home mom and a phenominal cook.

 - stay-at-home = housewife(politically incorrect), housekeeper
 - stewardess -> flight attendant
 - policeman -> police officer
 - fireman -> fire fighter
 - secretary -> assistant


4. Mr. Song works in a financial industry, and he quite often burns the midnight oil.

 - burn the midnight oil = work very hard = burn a candle from both ends


4-1.They also have a daughter in high school.


5. She usually comes home late after finishing private tutoring classes.


I really don't know how she does it.

It's ashamed that we can't see more of each other.
But it seems that we're all too busy.

What can you see outside of your office window?


1. I work in a major commercial district of Seoul called 여의도.


2. One of the best _perks_ is the of my  job is the view from my office.

 - perk = benefit = advantage


2-1. First, I can basically see a sea of skyscrapers outside my window. I can consider myself pretty lucky why(?) to have a nice view of 여의도 park from my windows as well.

 - a sea of STH = lots of STH
 - a skyscraper = a very tall building
 

3. Sometimes, when I get to big stressed out, watching people down in the park really helps me take my mind off of things.


4. Of course, I can see all the hustle and bustle of(?) downtown Seoul as well.

 - hustle and bustle = rush of people, very busy 웅성거림, 소란스러움


5. The streets below aline with traffic and pedestrians.

 - aline with = full of = pack with = crowd with = filled with


5-1. Since I'm up Sometime off on a high floor of my building I also have a view of the beautiful blue sky.

1. Hello, my name is Kim Nayeon. and I'm in my late 30's.

1-1. I'm living in Seoul, and currently work for bank.

1-2.  I'm married and my husband works at the same bank as I do.


2. I'm a mother of two (children) who are 7 and 9 years old.

2-1. As I'm a working mother, I live a very busy life having to work and raise my children at the same time.


3. As for a personality, I'm outgoing in have a positive attitude.

 - as for my persn
 - outgoing (active, sociable, extravagant) <-> shy (intravertital?)


4. I'm also quite active and enjoy doing outdoor activities.

 - active : you like to go outdoors and move around a lot


4-1. My husband and I enjoy playing tennis quite often and we go hiking every weekend.

Topic : Many Korean young students go overseas to study English these days, right?
What do you think about this trend?


in most cases they are separated with their family.



What is your opinion on sending kids overseas to learn English when they are young?

1. I have mixed feelings about sending kids overseas for English education at an early age.


2. I think childhood is an important time for child's development, and forcing a child to live in a completely different country other than Korea could make them culturely confused.


3. First,  they could have a hard time adjusting to the new environment.

- adjusting to it = getting used to it = getting comfortable with it = getting accustom to it


4. On the flip side, they could adjust so well thery're returning to Korea could be a reverse culture shock.

- on the flip side = on the other hand  이면에는,

4-1. It's also true that families are often separated when children go abroad to study.


5. Of course, English is very important these days, but I'm personally not sure we should sacrifice children's childhood just for the sake of English education.

it's acutually a tv drama that airs on Wed and Thu.

Can you tell us about a TV show you like to watch, what is it about?

1. These days, I'm really hooked on a TV show called 'two nights and three days'.

 = I'm addicted to a TV show


2. I guess it could be called a variety show, but it's also a reality program and a comedy.


3. There're 6 cast members on the show.

- the cast  출연진  ex: The cast are funny.


4. Some are comedians and some are singers.


5. Basically, the premise is that members of the show travel the various locations in Korea for an overnight trip.

The funny is part of the show is one that cast compete for various previlliges and punishments.

They compete for who gets proper meals and who gets to sleep inside.


I can't get enough of the show, because the cast have great chemistry and are hilarious.

What kind of household chores do you have to do around you house?

[ 책 ] 지식ⓔ season 1

예전에는 EBS가 채널 13번 이었고, 기타 공중파들은 5,7,9,11 이 정도 번호를 가지고 있었다. 그래서 무의식중에 넘기더라도 EBS가 걸리는 경우는 잘 없었다. 일부러 어떤 프로그램을 보려고 했다거나, 실수로 숫자를 누르지 않는 이상 말이다.
당시에 일부러 보려고 했던 프로그램도 거의 없었다. 가끔 우연히 보았던 독립영화관이 EBS였던가.. 그것도 가물가물하다. 한국방송같기도 하고..

그런데 여기와서는 11번이 MBC고, 13번이 SBS인데(인가?), 그 사이 12번이 EBS채널이다.
다른 방송채널 사이에 홈쇼핑이 끼어 있는데 여긴 EBS가 끼어있다. 적어도 나에게는 끼어있는 채널이었다. (요즘 티비도 잘 안 보지만-_-)

그런데 우연히 보게된-형이 보고 있어서?- 방송이 눈길을 확 끌었고, 그 책 또한 형을 통해 접하게 되었다.


단 5분.

방송은 얽힌 사연을 주저리주저리 풀어나가면서 나를 이해해주세요 라고 호소하지도 않고,
애써 사실처럼 꾸며담지도 않는다. 단 5분간 있는 그대로의 이야기를 풀어낸다.
아름다운, 아니 어쩌면 슬플지도 모르는 영상과 함께 말이다.


내가 알고 있는 많은 지식들이 어쩌면 단지 정보의 홍수속에 넘쳐 흘러내린 파편은 아니었는지, 정보의 바다에서 허우적대다가 내가 믿고 싶은것만 믿게 되어버린건 아닌지,
생각해보고..

언론은 언제나 진실일 수 없다는 것을,
그늘에서는 항상 소외받은 누군가가 있다는 것을,
말하게 해준다..


우리가 알고 있는 반대쪽의 일에 대해 한번쯤 생각하게 해주고,
주변에서 쉬이 지나칠 수 있는 사회에 만연한 현상에 대해 문제의식을 갖게 해주고,
힘없는 소수의 권리를 대변해주고,
한편의 아름다운 감동을 전해주는..
그런 책이었다.


말장난과 욕지거리가 난무하고,
자극적인 언행과 말초적인 자극만으로 경쟁하는 타방송사와 다르게
진정한 공영방송의 모습을 보여주는 EBS에 무한한 감사를 표한다.
